Valentine....

Happy valentine day for all loving couple!!! How your celebration for this year??? Any of you got red roses, candy in heart- shaped boxes, mushy valentines, and winged cherubs flying about shooting starry-eyed lovers with arrows??? Hope that is grand celebration. By the way what meaning of valentine right???

According to author Martha Zimmerman, the date traditionally celebrated as St. Valentine's Day finds it origin in the Roman festival of romance called Lupercalia, when the gods Juno and Pan were honored. It was a fertility festival or a lover's holiday looking forward to the return of Spring. In the fifth century, in an attempt to abolish the pagan festival, Pope Gelasius changed Lupercalia and its February 15 date to February 14 and called it Saint Valentine's Day. Even though the names and the date were changed, the emphasis continued to be on love.

As a Muslim, this celebrate is forbidden by religious law. There is much reason why it should be like that. It is because much terrible matter will happen such as wickedness. For me, valentine day is not important to celebrate. Sometimes, I forgot date of that celebration and although I remember, I will just ignore it. I was hear, why valentine should be on February 14.

There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine’s Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From Your Valentine”.

Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine. Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers. There was often a social gathering or a ball.

From my statement, we will know this celebration is so abroad. So, whatever you think about valentine, its up to you. So, I hope you will be happy with that celebration. See you next time. Bye!!!
